Naturopathic Services Qualifications Marilyn qualified as naturopath after completing her studies with the South Australian College of Natural and Traditional Medicine, the University of South Australia and the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health. Marilyn is accredited with a Bachelor of Health Science in Naturopathy and an Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Honours) in Nutrition. Naturopathy The philosophy of naturopathy (nature cure) and healing is to identify and treat the cause of an illness. Both the client and the naturopath actively work towards achieving the client's goal to allow the body to find homoeostasis (balance). Naturopathy uses nature's gifts of fresh 'live' food, herbs, homoeopathy and massage to gain balance in the individual. Naturopathy assists in revitalising good health and vitality through strengthening, cleansing, supporting and balancing the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind and an enhanced quality of life throughout the ages. Buteyko Breathing To assist people to manage chronic respiratory conditions Professor Konstantin Buteyko devised breathing exercises enabling children and adults to improve their quality of life. The Buteyko breathing exercises now assist people worldwide with the management of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, sleep apnoea, anxiety, sinusitis and other chronic conditions. Research carried out in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland over the last ten years revealed Buteyko Breathing exercises have had significant benefits for people with asthma by improving the quality of life, and reducing the reliance on medication. Breathing correctly through the nose enhances oxygen uptake into the cells thereby increasing energy, mental clarity, vitality, and increases immunity to many diseases. Nutrition Nutrition supports the health of the body and is an important aspect of all Natural therapies. The food we eat may determine our health status and vital energy. Nutrition is currently under scrutiny from Australian Federal and State Government Health Departments as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer statistics continue to rise and dominate healthcare. Australia's rate of obesity is one of the highest in the Western world. Even McDonald's marketing strategy recognises the need to promote healthy options to remain a leader in its field. Pills, remedies, and supplements will not cure a disease if diet and gut viability are not addressed. Food is our medicine, and the best medicine comes from fresh unprocessed food. Herbal Medicine Herbal medicine has been used for centuries, in fact doctors prescribed herbal medicine long before synthetic drugs were made. Herbs are slower acting than modern medicine, but taken in accordance with a trained practitioner's correct dosage they are gentler on the body's system with fewer side effects. Herbs support the immune system and the body both medicinally and nutritionally. In recent years many herbs have undergone stringent research to clinically prove their efficacy. An example is St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) often prescribed to assist in the management of mild to moderate depression.
